The Nuclear Option?
Published by finn March 18th, 2005 in PoliticsI spoke to my brother, Ben, yesterday and he said that he had been distracted from studying for his finals by writing emails to Senators in the hopes of stopping a silling rule change in the Senate. He said that it was called the “Nuclear Option” and that it would outlaw filibusters on judicial nominations. I looked into what he was talking about and found a commentary: NDOL: The “Nuclear Option”: Extremism in the Defense of Partisan Power.
After reading the commentary and accepting the bias of the source I became a little outraged. In my opinion, one of the things that makes America great is our abilityto make incremental changes to steer the country in one direction or the other. This is because of our two party system. The two party system protects those not only in the middle, but also those on the extremes of our political spectrum. One party, whether it be the Democratic Party or the Republican Party, should not be able to exert overwhelming influence to make important decisions such as life-long appointments to judicial posts.
Please make your voice heard and contact your Senator to stop a rule change that would allow a majority party to force all it’s nominations through.
